Biruta shares her thoughts about what it was like before she moved to Australia.

Griffith University intern Andrejs Boboks is embarking on a documentary series covering the Latvian and Russian ethnic community of Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

Andrejs chats to Biruta who shares her thoughts about what it was like before she moved to Australia.

She was born in Latvia and her family had a pleasant life in her home country. Her father was a journalist who worked at the local paper. Her whole family had to flee the country simply because the work that her father did as a journalist was not liked by people.

In 1944 they moved to Germany and wandered around from place to place for a few years staying in refugee camps.

Biruta says it was not until October 1948 that the opportunity to migrate to Australia arose. New South Wales was a wonderful place to settle, it was nice and warm and had all the lovely birds to look at.
