Meet Angela she founded her own copywriting business.
Creative Folk, Entrepreneurs | November 14, 2018It all started with a goal to chat to entrepreneurs over 60. Then out of curiosity we decided to talk to entrepreneurs under 30. We believe these two very vast generations can learn and grow from each other.
This week we visit Brisbane Australia and chat with Angela Rodgers who founded her own Business to business copywriting business.
Can you tell us a little about your business and what you do? I’m a Business to Business copywriter. I work with a lot of businesses, agencies, and brands to write their website copy, blogs, and other marketing materials. Basically, I get paid to learn and write about all sorts of different topics and businesses and make them easy for audiences to connect with. I’m based in Brisbane and most of my clients are in Australia, although I’ve got a few international clients too. You can read more about me (and what I do) at angelarodgers.com.
What were some of the struggles you faced when you first started?
When I started working for myself five years ago (when I was just 21), there were three things that I struggled with. First of all, pricing myself. I had no idea how much I needed to charge, and I was just happy getting paid something to write. Secondly, narrowing down and focusing on a particular skill set. I started in digital marketing (which is extremely broad) and found it a lot easier once I transitioned into just copywriting and content writing. And finally, picking a niche to focus on. Since figuring out I want to focus on B2B, it’s been much easier to make the right connections and sell my services.
What do you like most about having your own business?
I get to work in my own space from home, which helps me produce my absolute best work. Plus, I’ve got more flexibility to spend time with my young family and be part of their day. I couldn’t do all of this if I worked in someone else’s business.
What advice would you give to your younger self?
Stick to your vision. You can do this. Keep learning as much as you can, and it will pay off.
Who is an older person that you admire and why?
My great grandma was pretty cool (she made it to 102). I don’t just admire her for her longevity though. She was a feisty lady and raised four small children on her own after her husband died. She just got on with life, made the most of things, and was always super practical.
If you could jump into a time machine what era would you visit and why?
If I absolutely had to, it might be cool to jump back into the advertising golden age back in the 1960s and poke my head into an advertising agency. But really, the golden age is here and now. There are so many amazing opportunities if you know where to look.
Anything else you would like to add?
I might be younger than most others in business, but some of my favourite people to collaborate and work with are older than me. I learn from their decades of experience, and they seem to appreciate my fresh perspectives and ideas. Life and business are just better when we all.
