Meet our 2016 interns

Meet Kate our public relations intern from Griffith University. She answered a few questions about her internship with Celebrate Living History.

What attracts you about being an intern at Celebrate Living History?

I have some very intelligent, worldly seniors in my life and the idea of sharing their stories with a new generation of Australians struck me as vitally important. I had never come across an organization with this mission and I knew I’d love to be a part of it.
I’ve travelled to Borneo with a group of fellow students to attempt the Sandakan to Ranau Death March which took the lives of over 2000 Australian and British POW’s under Japanese command in WWII. The purpose of us students completing the gruelling trek through the jungles of Borneo was to bear witness to the indomitable nature of the Australian spirit, and return home to share the stories of these brave men with our generation. Celebrate Living History recognizes the value in unearthing and preserving our history at the roots by linking the young with the old. The whole concept is beautiful.

Who is an older person that you admire and why?

Lucy Tallbot was the most kind and quick-witted lady I’ve had the pleasure of knowing in my life. She lived next door to us since my brother’s and I were born. She loved telling me stories of her girlhood in rural Australia, and never missed a chance to tell me about the time she passed me back over the fence to my mum after I’d crawled under it as a kid. She gave me my first job of vacuuming her carpet and tending to her garden. We’d swap birthday and Christmas presents every year up until her passing. I wouldn’t hesitate to call her my first best friend.

If you could jump into a time machine what era would you visit and why?

Difficult question to answer, but I can’t go past the 1950’s for the fashion alone. I miss the fact that everyone wore hats and gloves, and who doesn’t love those big beautiful dresses?
