Meet Stephanie a yoga teacher and podcast star.

We are on the quest to interview business owners over the age of 60. This week we visit rural NSW in Australia and chat with Stephanie Cunningham who teaches yoga to seniors and runs her own podcast.
Can you tell me a little bit about your business and what you do?
Because initially I couldn’t work when I moved to Australia, I tried yoga and found yoga very beneficial  for 50 plus body. As work restrictions eased, I took general and specialised yoga teacher training to teach seniors. I have been teaching seniors for 10 years.
Later I developed a course to teach other yoga teachers to teach yoga to seniors. Last year I began a podcast about the other face of yoga as a marketing tool for my yoga classes and courses. Yoga is for everybody but the perception of yoga is that it is for young, flexible women. My podcast showcases yoga teachers and yoga therapists who provide yoga classes to students with different levels of wellness and fitness. I found the podcast to be extremely satisfying and the podcast has grown to where I am negotiating with sponsors to support the podcast. You can find the podcast at
www.yogalightness.com.au/podcasts/
I am launching a second podcast in a few weeks – Day to Day Retirement to talk about how retirement will be different for the baby boomers. I am interviewing retirees about their retirement experience and experts in various aspects of retirement.
The podcast arena seems to be my niche, as it is far more successful and satisfying than I anticipated.
What motivates you to keep working after 60?
Passion and purpose. I receive a great deal of fulfilment from teaching seniors and the podcast. These activities meet my need to contribute to others, provide social interaction through interviewing people from around the world, learn new things, and maintain physical and mental wellness.
What do you like most about having your own business?
I love the freedom to shape the business to meet my needs as well as
providing valuable services to others and to set my own schedule.
What have been some of the struggles you have faced with running your own business?
My career was in government which is a very different mindset. Marketing was very foreign to me. It took me some time to understand what I had to do in this area, as well as accept that ongoing support is critical.
What are some of the most important lessons you have learnt in life?
Patience and kindness are invaluable. Have no expectations of anyone but yourself. Don’t label others; just accept their journey and realise they are doing the best they can.
What advice would you give to the younger generation?
To be creative and think out of the box. This is the younger generation’s strength and how many new ideas and products or services are created.

If you could jump into a time machine what era would you visit and why?

100 years in the future. It would be fascinating to see how things
have changed and if we have solved or made progress solving some of our most pressing problems.
Anything else you would like to add?

Be flexible in your thinking. Be open to opportunities that may be quite different from your current activities or occupation.
